Isotoma axillaris, commonly known as the Rock Isotome, Showy Isotome, or Laurentia, is a hardy Australian native perennial herb famous for its prolific, star-shaped flowers that range from bright blue and mauve to pink or white. It is a versatile choice for cottage gardens, rockeries, and containers due to its mounding habit and long flowering season from September to May
Key Features
Appearance: Forms a dense, upright mound about 30–50 cm tall with fine, deeply-toothed green foliage.
Flowers: Scented, 5-petaled star flowers (approx. 3.5 cm wide) that attract native blue-banded bees and butterflies.
Hardiness: Drought tolerant once established and handles light frost, though it may die back in winter and regrow in spring.
Growing Tips
Position: Best in full sun to part shade for maximum flower production.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, moist soils but is highly adaptable to sandy or rocky gaps.
Maintenance:
Pruning: Cut back hard after flowering (autumn) to encourage fresh growth and prevent the plant from becoming woody.
Watering: While drought-tolerant, it flowers best with regular moisture during hot months.
NOTE:
The milky sap is a severe irritant. It can cause skin irritation and temporary blindness if it comes into contact with your eyes.
Always wear gloves when pruning or handling cuttings.
Keep away from pets and livestock as it is toxic to stock
Available in a 14cm pot
