Isopogon formosus, also known as the Rose Coneflower, is a shrub native to Western Australia. It has divided leaves, rosy pink flowers, and globular fruit. 

Appearance

  • Erect or spreading shrub that can grow to 1.5–2 m  tall 

  • Young growth is silky and sometimes reddish 

  • Adult leaves are green to reddish-green, with sharply pointed segments 

  • Flowers are rose-pink to pale pink, and bloom in winter and spring 

  • Fruit is a hairy nut fused with others in a spherical or oval head 

Habitat 

  • Grows in heath land and dry sclerophyll woodlands

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade

  • Grows in well-drained sandy or gravelly soil

  • Can tolerate light frost

Maintenance 

  • Requires gentle pruning to keep tidy and promote vigor

  • Requires tip pruning for best results

  • Requires a dose of slow release fertilizer every so often

  • Requires watering when the soil appears dry

  • Requires a low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser

Uses 

  • Attracts bees, birds, and butterflies to the garden

  • Ideal for coastal plantings

  • Generally pest resistant in most locations
