Hakea laurina, also known as the Pincushion Hakea, is a shrub or small tree with destinctive red flowers and blue-green leaves. It's native to southwestern Australia. 

Appearance 

  • Size: Can grow up to 20 ft tall and wide

  • Leaves: Long, leathery, and slightly blue-green

  • Flowers: Red, pincushion-shaped flowers that bloom in clusters from autumn to winter

  • Fruit: Egg-shaped fruit that grow in clusters

Growing conditions 

  • Prefers full sun and well-drained soil

  • Tolerates drought and coastal conditions

  • Can grow in sand to clay loams if drainage is adequate

  • Avoids overwatering

  • Frost tender in new growth made in autumn

Uses Can be used as a screen or hedge, Attracts birds, Useful for cut flower arrangements, and Great in Mediterranean gardens and coastal gardens. 

Maintenance 

  • Low maintenance

  • Low water usage

  • Can be staked in areas exposed to wind

  • Can be mulched to retain moisture in the soil

  • Can be fed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring
