Gastrolobium celsianum (syn. Brachysema lanceolatum) is a small, evergreen shrub with red flowers and silvery leaves. Itis also known as the Swan River Pea. 

Features 

  • Flowers: Red pea-like flowers that bloom in winter and spring

  • Leaves: Silvery-backed leaves

  • Size: Can grow up to 2 meters tall

  • Habitat: Grows in sandy or gravelly soils along watercourses in south-west Western Australia

  • Climate: Adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates, including humid ones

  • Frost: Tolerates medium frosts

Uses Can be used as an understory plant, Can add color to shrubberies, and Can be trained as a climber. 

Care 

  • Requires well-drained soil

  • Only water when the soil appears dry (approx 1cm below the surface), then water until damp

  • Do not over water

Toxicity 

  • Gastrolobium species can be harmful if eaten by humans and non-native animals

  • Safe for indigenous animals
