Eucalyptus ovata, also known as swamp gum or black gum, is a small to medium-sized tree tat is native to southeastern Australia. It has smooth bark, glossy green leaves, and white flowers. 

Appearance

  • Bark: Grey-black, fibrous, compact, and platy on the lower trunk 

  • Leaves: Juvenile leaves are dull green and elliptic, while adult leaves are glossy green and ovate or broad-lanceolate 

  • Flowers: White, in clusters of seven diamond-shaped buds 

  • Fruit: Funnel-shaped with a flat top, 3-4 valves, and not exserted 

Growing conditions 

  • Prefers poorly drained infertile and clay soils

  • Frost resistant

  • Can grow in full sun or semi shade

  • Can be used as a windbreak or light shade tree for swampy areas and creek banks

Uses 

  • Koala food plant

  • Attracts birds and butterflies

  • Aboriginal use included food, medicines, containers, string, and tools
