Dianella caerulea, also known as the blue flax-lily, is a perennial herb with grass-like leaves and blue flowers. It is native to Australia and is commonly found in gardens and plantings. 

Appearance

  • Grows to about 1 meter tall and wide 

  • Has fibrous roots and a thick, spreading underground rhizome 

  • Leaves are bluish-green, strap-like, and can be 10–75 cm long 

  • Flowers are star-shaped, whitish blue to dark blue, and have six petals 

  • Berries are indigo-colored, globose, and contain several black seeds 

Growing conditions 

  • Adapts to a range of conditions, including full sun to partial shade and various soil types

  • Prefers un-mulched sites

  • Good for erosion control

  • Can be used as an edging plant, rockery plant, or soil binding plant on slopes

Maintenance

  • Low maintenance and only needs trimming approximately once every 5 to 8 years if at all 

  • Pruning can keep its form and inspire new growth 

  • Remove any dead, broken, or overgrown leaves 

Other uses 

  • The leaves are used to make decoration baskets and strings due to their strong silky fiber

  • The ripe fruits are used to treat ulcers

  • The flower petals are used as ingredient for medicinal purposes
