Banksia integrifolia, also known as the coast banksia, is a tree or shruc native to Australia that can be very large. It has dark green leaves, pale yellow flowers, and woody cones that produce seeds. 

Appearance 

  • Rough, grey to brown bark

  • Dark green leaves with silvery undersides

  • Pale yellow flowers in autumn and winter

  • Woody cones that produce seeds in late spring and early summer

Size

  • Can grow to be 25 meters tall, but is often smaller 

  • In garden settings, it's usually 5–10 meters tall 

Habitat

  • Grows along the east coast of Australia, from Victoria to Central Queensland 

  • Grows in a variety of habitats, including coastal dunes and mountains 

  • Tolerates salt spray, humidity, wind, and frost 

Uses Ornamental tree, Shade tree, Coastal gardens, Native borders, and Windbreaks. 

Care 

  • Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny location

  • Prune as required after flowering

  • Feed with a slow release native fertilizer during spring

Other features

  • Flowers are rich in nectar, which is a food source for birds, insects, marsupials, and bats 

  • Fruit provides a seed source for cockatoos
