Banksia blechnifolia is a prostrate shrub native to Western Australia. It is also known as fern-leaved Banksia or groundcover Banksia. 

Appearance

  • Upright, cylindrical flowers that are dusky pink, red, cream, rusty orange, and brown 

  • Hairy new foliage growth that is dusky pink, red, or rust colored 

  • Deeply lobed, bluish green leaves that are up to 45 cm long and 4 to 10 cm wide 

Growing conditions

  • Grows in white sand, in heath or mallee heath 

  • Ideally, this species should be grown in well-drained, sandy soils with pH 5.5 to 7.0 

  • Tolerates some clay as long as good drainage is always provided 

  • Some shade is acceptable; however, for best flowering full sun is highly recommended 

  • Requires little watering and use a slow release fertiliser in the spring 

Uses 

  • Well suited as a ground cover in the home garden

  • Ideal as ground cover, in rockeries and shrubberies
